The Educational & Cultural Centre is based on attributes of other centres that are already established and which have similar aims and objectives to our own. We have visited and spoken to the management committees of other existing centres in other cities which emulate the aims of our project.
The Gurdwara has extensively reviewed and identified what the community needs are, and future demands will be, as part of the consultation programme.
These consultations have been carried out through qualitative questionnaires, open days, focus groups and on a one-to-one basis. With over 90% participation,
each individual has made a positive contribution in crafting and contributing to the future of this centre.
Sri Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara started in 1961 from a small Gurdwara at 35 Rosamond Street, Hulme Manchester with only a few members. In 1972 we moved to Upper Brook Street above a shop where we stayed for approximately 3 years, at this time other properties were purchased for the use of the Gurdwara but never actually became a Gurdwara.
In 1975, 61 Upper Chorlton Road was purchased and Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurdwara in Manchester has been operative from these premises since. In 1982 an extension to the side of the Gurdwara Sahib Ji was built at a cost of £19,000 to accommodate the growing sangat. This extension has served the sangat well. In 1994 the Gurdwara Sahib Ji was extended again, this time a huge extension to the back was built and the existing front was also renovated at a cost of just under £200,000.
In November 2002 Sadh Sangat ji purchased a second building at 57 Upper Chorlton Road for £320,000 shortly after it was then decided that this would become the new Gurdwara Sahib Ji. In February 2003 a 23 member board
was formed for 5 years to do the necessary work to make this the new Gurdwara Sahib Ji. On the 18th July 2007 after a lot of hard work by the board members Manchester City Council Planning Department approved the plans for the new Gurdwara Sahib Ji, over the next few pages you will see the approved plans. They have given a time limit of 3 years to build the new Gurdwara Sahib Ji.
